Experience

A highly-regarded urban public school educator in New Jersey. Educator/consultant with experience in curriculum design, professional development, in formal and informal education both with adults and children, online and traditional settings, and teaching at the K-12 levels. Self-driven and goal-oriented to impact and improve student learning and capacity. Strongly interest in online mentoring, project coordination and distance collaboration. He has extensive experience in, advocacy, education reform, youth leadership, teaching and learning strategies, and civic development and brings a wide variety of leadership experiences, ranging military leadership training from Navy ROTC, Emergency Management and Citizen Corps to Corporate and education leadership.

 

He has endeavored to make his professional life a reflection of his holistic learning philosophy.  He is an NLP behavioral counselor (Master Practitioner) which he integrated into his rites of passage training system and his manhood coaching.  These became the social base which rounded out his martial arts and yoga teaching methodology while having a great appreciation for the value of social education and character development. He concurrently had a professional path in technology and mathematics where he started as a network and integration consultant.  He later became a financial software analyst and then project manager before the teaching bug really hit.  He became an educational technology assistant, a technology teacher, and then eventually a math teacher.  Now he strives to use his teaching experience to transfer social and technological education to economically and socially empower and transform both youth and adult learners, enabling them to navigate the complexities of modern fast paced world while successfully articulating their personal dreams and life missions.

 

Education

Heru Maakhet Neb Shakara received his undergraduate joint degree in Philosophy and an information systems degree from the Rutgers University and NJIT.  His graduate degree Information systems from NJIT with a graduate certificate in Certificate in Crisis Management and Business Continuity and current working on his Post graduate Certification in Education Supervision at Kean University. He also has received a NJ mathematics teaching license with endorsements Economics and Finance, and Business Computer applications as well as State of New Jersey OEM Community Emergency Response  Train there Trainer Certification, and  various technology certification including, Microsoft Office, Web Author, Help Desk, PC Management, Oracle PSQL and the Federal Reserve Keys to Financial Success program  

Experience

Brian “AqMen” Armstead has extensive experience working with communities, children, and families.  He has counseled and taught individuals; facilitated and convened diverse groups, taught classes, mediated conflicts between individuals and groups, and lectured, spoken and performed in front of large audiences and testified in front of various legislative bodies.

Mr. Armstead is a skilled convener and facilitator.  Among his responsibilities at the Ed Fund, he convenes the Education First Compact, a diverse group of education stakeholders representing a wide array of organizations including government and business partners, foundations, education service-providers, parent and student organizing groups, community-based organizations, social service entities, communities of faith, and others. 

 

He has also facilitated support groups and educational groups for people of all ages.  For example, Brother AqMen co-founded and co-facilitated the Father’s Day Rally Committee’s David P. Richardson, Jr. Rites of Passage for teenage Black males. 

 

Throughout his career, he has engaged varied communities on a broad array of issues including, education, neighborhood (physical, economic, and social) planning, and the prevention and resolution of intergroup conflict.

 

In addition to the Rites of Passage (mentioned above) Brian has a long history of working with youth and families, including as a social worker for Philadelphia’s Department of Human Services and a SCOH social worker for SCAN, Inc.

Education

Mr. Armstead holds dual degrees--Master of Social Work (MSW) and Master of City Planning (MCP)--from the University of Pennsylvania.  He also holds a Bachelors of Science (B.S.) in Marketing from the Pennsylvania State University. 

Brian is also certified as a Child Welfare Social Worker (Commonwealth of Pennsylvania), Mediator (Good Shephard Mediation Center), and NLP Behavioral Counselor (NLP Awareness Center).

Philosophy

AqMen believes in the power of people to solve their own problems.  This often requires collaboration and dialogue and a willingness to develop and harness new skills.  It almost always requires teachers and trainers to “meet their client/student where they are” and to be flexible and creative about how they teach their material. 

 

Brian also believes that individuals and groups can overcome their current challenges and build a brighter future for themselves, their families, and their communities.

I follow the path that has been opened to me by the Power(s) that be.  I have been on this path since I was a mere child sharing my sight with my mother who raised and guided me in a semi-traditional American Indian upbringing.

I continued the path of learning American Indian Spirituality and other formal intersecting spiritual beliefs.  I became drawn to Western High Magic Metaphysics which combines various other beliefs including African, Hebraic, and Eastern Belief Systems.  Guided by my Spiritual Teacher, I became initiated into High Magic, and began to serve others through Divination, Clairvoyance, Dream Telepathy, Energy Medicine, Psychometry, Riddhi, and Witnessing.  

Later, I discovered the New Thought Philosophy.  It centers around the One Heart, One Mind, One Spirit connection which I have adopted into all aspects of what I do as I evolve to a higher awareness.

In an effort to heal my spiritual trauma and assist other people with theirs I became initiated as a African traditional Priest.  I am working to heal my past for a brighter and stronger future for me, my family and the world.
